Vegas a sure bet for Daytime Emmys - Las Vegas Review - Journal

Last year, Wayne Brady attended the Daytime Emmy Awards in Las Vegas; this year, he's hosting Sunday's live telecast from the Las Vegas Hilton.

You don't mess with success.

Which explains why this weekend's Daytime Emmy Awards are back in Las Vegas -- for the second consecutive year.

The 38th annual Daytime Emmys, to be broadcast on CBS, go live from the Las Vegas Hilton Theater at 5 p.m. Sunday (local viewers can catch the tape-delayed telecast at 8 p.m. on KLAS-TV, Channel 8).

Last year, organizers rolled the dice when they moved the Daytime Emmys from Hollywood to Las Vegas.

This year, however, the Vegas return ranks as a sure bet.

"You guys have become our home away from home," notes executive producer David McKenzie, president of Associated Television International, which is producing the awards show for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

In part, that's because the Daytime Emmys' 2010 Las Vegas debut proved "really successful -- for the first time in many years," explains Associated Television's Al Schwartz, another of the show's executive producers.

Not only did the 2010 awards broadcast have "outstanding ratings," Schwartz notes, it won the night, becoming the evening's top-rated program "for the first time in a long time."

Las Vegas "played a really important role" in that ratings surge, Schwartz maintains.

Taking a cue from its new showbizzy home, the 2010 telecast combined the usual awards -- honoring the best in daytime talk shows, game shows, kids' shows and soap operas -- with entertainment segments that "carried the flavor of Las Vegas," according to Schwartz.

Last year's show featured Blue Man Group and "The Lion King" and included a tribute to "American Bandstand" pioneer Dick Clark, combining Las Vegas' "capital of entertainment" image with "the glitziness of the daytime stars," Schwartz noted.

"We didn't know we could marry the two," he says of the show's Vegas debut, "but it came out terrific. People told me it was the best Daytime Emmy Awards they'd ever seen, because it was more entertaining than it ever was."

This year's awards show will follow the same Vegas-centric formula.

Former Venetian headliner Wayne Brady -- an Emmy winner in his own right for his daytime talk show and prime time's "Whose Line Is It Anyway" -- returns as host for the first time since 2003.

This year's host gig includes an opening dance number that teams Brady with the Monte Carlo's Jabbawockeez.

"I don't think you could see Regis doing that," Brady says, citing last year's host, Regis Philbin. "I think the producers, when they approached me, they recognized the need for showbiz."

Besides, you can't do an awards show from Las Vegas "and not work in Vegas" throughout the show, Brady adds.

For example, the "Viva Las Vegas" number from Cirque du Soleil's "Viva Elvis" show at Aria will remind audiences that the King himself once rocked the Hilton showroom during his Vegas reign.

The Rio's resident bad boys of magic, Penn & Teller, will appear, Schwartz reports, along with Flamingo headliner Marie Osmond, who'll salute daytime TV's military viewers.

Speaking of salutes, Oprah Winfrey -- whose syndicated talk show recently departed the airwaves after a landmark 25-year run -- will receive the TV academy's Crystal Pillar Award for "changing the face of daytime television."

Tropicana headliner Gladys Knight will host the Winfrey tribute and Caesars Palace regular Celine Dion will participate.

In addition, a package of reelin'-in-the-years film clips will feature more than 50 stars.

When they started planning the Winfrey tribute, "we thought what we had was a brilliant idea," Schwartz recalls, "but we didn't realize there would be 20 tributes to Oprah" before this weekend's Daytime Emmys.

Echoing Winfrey's famous audience giveaways, viewers at home will be able to "Watch and Win" extravagant Oprah-inspired prizes, McKenzie says, from a yacht cruise to a suite stay at the Bahamas' Atlantis Resort.

Playing to the show's home audience -- while playing to the audience in the Hilton showroom -- represents a dual challenge, Brady acknowledges.

"I'm a live performer -- and also a TV professional," he explains. "I'm always aware of the people watching. They want the best show possible. And I want it to be funny for the millions of people we hope to attract."

Last year, organizers "had to convince the network we could bring in a creditable show," Schwartz says. "This year was a no-brainer."

As for future years, McKenzie says, "as long as Vegas wants us to come back, we'll be there."

Quick Takes: 'Book of Mormon' cast album ranks No. 3 on US sales charts - Los Angeles Times

After winning nine Tony Awards Sunday night, including the one for best musical, "The Book of Mormon" got more good news Wednesday: Its cast album ranked No. 3 on the U.S. sales charts last week.

It was the highest-charting Broadway cast album — and first top 10 — since 1969, when "Hair" spent 13 weeks at No. 1, Billboard reported.

The Broadway album sold 61,000 units during the week that ended Sunday — a paltry figure compared, say, with the more than 1.1. million that Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold two weeks ago, but Billboard said it marked the largest sales week for any cast album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991, the previous record having been 54,000 for "Phantom of the Opera" in 1992.

The trade publication said "Book of Mormon" was helped by AmazonMP3 having priced a digital copy at $1.99 for three days last week.

Topping the Billboard chart was Adele's "21," with "Born This Way" at No.2

Rijksmuseum redo on track

Rembrandt's "Night Watch" and other famed works by Dutch masters will return to their permanent home by 2013, as a radical decade-long renovation of the national Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam nears completion.

A sneak preview Wednesday showed the 19th century museum both modernized and closer to its original plan. Its red-brick exterior, reminiscent of a fairy-tale castle, remains intact. Inside, maze-like corridors have been scrapped in favor of large spaces and high ceilings.

The museum will house about 7,500 works of art for public viewing, around the same amount as before renovations began in 2003.

Originally scheduled for completion by 2009, the $536-million renovation has faced several setbacks, notably an "only-in-Amsterdam" fight over bicycle access.

Bike advocates won, and a window-lined public tunnel runs through the middle of the ground floor.

Timberlake's more into acting

For the umpteenth time, Justin Timberlake still has no plans to return to music anytime soon.

Though the Grammy winner is toplining two summer films, "Bad Teacher" with Cameron Diaz and "Friends With Benefits" alongside Mila Kunis, he is still being quizzed about his largely dormant recording career. And the answer remains the same.

"I don't have a single song ready to go," Timberlake told Playboy in a recent interview. "People keep asking me when a new song or album is coming out, and I don't know what to say. Music is not my focus right now. It may be someday. It could happen next month or next year but right now it's not where it's at for me."

Timberlake hasn't released a disc since 2006's platinum-selling "FutureSex/LoveSounds."

Oscar could have fewer choices - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Putting an emphasis on quality rather than quantity, the Academy Awards shook up the best picture category again. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that it had approved a change in the nomination process that will allow between five and 10 best picture nominees. A film will need a minimum of 5 percent first-place votes to be nominated for best picture.

Bruce Davis, retiring executive director of the academy, recommended the change. “In studying the data, what stood out was that academy members had regularly shown a strong admiration for more than five movies,” Davis said. “A best picture nomination should be an indication of extraordinary merit. If there are only eight pictures that truly earn that honor in a given year, we shouldn’t feel an obligation to round out the number.”

Gold awards for all 9 Lincoln schools - The Lincoln Journal

Gold awards for all 9 Lincoln schools
By SE?N O?DONOGHUE
Managing Editor
HAMLIN - All nine of Lincoln County?s schools recently received Gold Awards of Distinction in the USDA?s Food and Nutrition Service?s HealthierUS School Challenge program. An awards ceremony was held at Lincoln County Board of Education headquarters in Hamlin, Monday, June 6, 2011.

The nine county schools, Midway Elementary, Ranger Elementary, West Hamlin Elementary, Duval PK-8, Hamlin PK-8, Guyan Valley Middle School, Harts Intermediate, Harts Primary and Lincoln County High School, were the only award winners in West Virginia. Only 127 schools in the nation received gold awards, of which nine were the Lincoln County facilities.

The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. In February, 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced Let?s Move, incorporating the HealthierUS School Challenge into her campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids. At that time, monetary incentive awards became available for each HUSSC award level: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Award of Distinction. The nine schools in Lincoln County received the Gold Award of Distinction.

Lincoln County Board of Education member Steve Priestley paid tribute to the county?s schools and nutrition personnel. During comments at the June 7, 2011 regular session of the board in Hamlin, Priestley described the awards as a ?tremendous achievement.? He also told his board colleagues that Lincoln was the first county in the state to receive the gold award, and the first in the mid-Atlantic region to do so. Priestley also praised the work of the county administration and Food Service Director Diane Miller.

No more national awards - Mumbai Mirror

The story was about a piece of land in want of rains. The families that fought nature and the British to reclaim what was their own sometime in the 19th Century. The story ended with the sky pouring down.

Prophetic, for the awards started pouring in for the film and the filmmakers Aaamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker soon after.

Lagaan, ten years back, started a new era in Indian cinema. It proved that even films that had 90 minutes of cricket in the second half could work. And work well.

On completing ten years of the film that changed his fate, Aamir Khan opened up about the trials and tribulations he went through as an actor, a filmmaker and an individual while creating the epic. Here are some excerpts from the revelations he made.

“It was an evening to traverse down memory lane”

Last evening, Aamir Khan held a bash. First of it's kind, the bash was to celebrate ten years of Lagaan and Aamir Khan Productions. Aamir himself, however, chose to call it 'not such a big celebration'.

"We have not invited the entire industry. It's a special day for us on an emotional level," he justified. "We have invited people who have worked with Aamir Khan Productions.

The key cast and crew of all our ventures, Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na, Dhobi Ghat, Peepli Live and Delhi Belly have been invited. I have not even invited my close friends Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Raju Hirani.

It is an evening to go down the memory lane. It's for the people who have contributed to my company and been a part of its growth," he added.

“I have decided to avoid Amole and Anusha”

However, it's not just his close friends who were left out from the guest list. Two key players of Aamir Khan Productions did not receive the invite either. Namely, TZP writer Amole Gupte and Peepli Live director Anusha Rizvi.

"I feel I mustn't keep negativity in my life," said Aamir explaining his decision to keep the two people off the guest list. "If some people are unhappy with me, why should I add to it? I don't want to bring up the ugly past and have decided to avoid," he added.

Anusha Rizvi, writer and director of Peepli Live and her husband Mehmood Farooqui, the co-director had blamed Aamir of stealing the limelight away.

Aamir on the other hand, breaking his silence, said that he was disappointed with Anusha questioning his role as a producer.

Amole Gupte, who wrote Taare Zameen Par had a fallout with the actor way before Anusha. He was unhappy with Aamir for taking over Taare Zameen Par, a film which was supposed to be his directorial debut.

Aamir Khan, however, seems to have moved on. "As far as Amole and Anusha are concerned, they are free to have their own opinion. Sometimes, there can be disagreements in life. If Amole feels that TZP was not a good film, that's his decision.

What can I say? As a director, I had done my best. I appreciate his writing and he had a very good script. Similarly, if Anusha feels that I am not a good producer, it's her opinion. Though, I do not agree with her.

I know how to shoulder my responsibilities as a producer. I tried my best to give a good platform to the creative talent in Peepli Live, be it Anusha, Mehmood, Omkar, Indian Ocean or anybody else," he added.

“Javed Akhtar said Lagaan will be a disaster”

Lagaan. A film that changed perceptions, careers and even lives. A film that was not that easy to make. Reminiscing about the times when Ashutosh Gowariker first came to him with the script, Aamir Khan revealed how he never thought he would produce a film.

"If you read my earlier interviews, I had always maintained that I would never produce a film. I had seen my father suffer with the making of Locket.

The film went on for eight years. As kids, my sisters and I have suffered because of it," said Aamir talking about the reason.

"Ashu had come to me with the script of Lagaan. I loved it immensely. But I was in two minds. I told him that I love it but I can't do it. After three months, I heard the script again. I still did not take it on. Ashu, meanwhile was narrating the script to different people.

Six months after that, I heard it again, and I said 'Yaar yeh toh kamaal ki script hai, mujhe karni chahiye'," Aamir revealed his initial indecision about the film that went on to be a blockbuster.

"Three more months went by and I told Ashu that I will act in the film. I asked him to get a producer. But Ashu couldn't find one. Finally, I asked my parents and my ex-wife Reena to hear the script.

They loved it. My abbajaan told me 'Aamir achchi script bahut kam baar milti hai, aapko karni chahiye'. That's when I told Ashu that I won't just act in his film, but produce it too," the actor added.

After the initial worries were overcome, there were other hurdles on the way. Talking about them, Aamir said, "We wanted Javed Akhtar to write the lyrics for the film. So, I sent Ashu to narrate the script to him.

The moment Ashu left from there, Javedsaab called me and asked me not to do the film. He said it'll be a disaster. I was shocked. I was already scared to make a film on this scale and Javedsaab just added to it. I went to him and talked about it.

He wasn't convinced. But he agreed to write the songs, anyway. Finally, when the film released, Javedsaab was convinced about the film's merit."

“I didn't want to make films without Reena”

After a successful beginning to Aamir Khan Productions with Lagaan, he waited five long years to move on to the next production Taare Zameen Par. Revealing the reason for the delay, Aamir said, "Good films work on their own. That's what I believe.

Reena and I decided that Lagaan was a good experience. We thought, film bana kar mazaa aaya. We decided to make more.

Then Reena and I went through a separation and divorce. I dropped the idea of making more films. Without Reena, mera dil nahi tha. I decided not to take production forward. I didn't want to make films without her.

But then Taare Zameen Par came along. The moment I heard it, I knew I had to produce it. And then it went on and on."

Awards hold no value for me, anymore”

Lagaan took Aamir Khan and his production house to the Oscars. However, the producer Aamir has now decided not to be a part of any awards henceforth. He will not send his films for any award function, including the national award.

"I want to stay away from these awards. As a production house, we would not actively apply for any award henceforth. I am not even sending Dhobi Ghat for the national awards," said Aamir.

"I am not objecting to the awards or questioning them either. As a producer, I am not going to send my films.

That's about it. I want to spend my time making films. I will spend my time doing things that mean something to me and not indulge in things that hold no value for me. For me, audience response is of paramount importance. Awards aren't. That's it," added the filmmaker.

Portland's KGW receives Edward R. Murrow Award - OregonLive.com

In journalism -- print and broadcast -- awards are plentiful. But for TV stations, a national Edward R. Murrow Award, named for the famed broadcaster and given by the Radio Television Digital News Association, is comparatively rare.

While dozens of regional Murrow Awards are given out each year, just 13 national awards were given this week to large-market TV stations from across the country, and Portland's KGW received recognition for feature reporting.

The March 2010 report, by photographer Kurt Austin and anchor Laural Porter, told the story of Bao Green, a single mother originally from Tanzania who was losing her sight until a Portland eye clinic's charity fund paid for a $30,000 artificial corneal transplant. "A Long Journey" ((link to report: http://contests.rtdna.org/entries/public –view/4530))) runs almost five minutes -- a rarity in TV news where one-minute-and-thirty-second stories are more common.

Porter said the road to her report ran through her beauty parlor, where she first learned of a local doctor who performed this particular medical procedure.

"A Long Journey" won a regional Murrow Award earlier this year and then was in competition with other regional winners for the national contest.

Porter, whose primary duty is to anchor newscasts, said she worked on "A Long Journey" as an enterprise piece. She praised Austin's work on the story.

"I give him so much of the credit because he not only shoots, he edits," she said. "He has a way of blending in, of capturing magic moments."

A ceremony for 2011 Murrow Award winners will be held this fall in New York City. Prior to this year's win, the last national Murrow winner among Portland TV stations was also KGW, in 2008 for continuing coverage of a winter storm.

Red Hot: Christina Hendricks' Clothing Catches Fire at Tony Awards - Fox News

| New York Post

Flame-haired "Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks was literally sizzling hot at the Tony Awards afterparty when she caught fire and burst into flames, the New York Post reported Thursday.

The actress got too close to a candle at the glitzy gathering and set her spring trench coat on fire, fellow guests said. The party was held at Sunday at New York hotel The Carlyle, where the Empire Suite was decked out with burning candles.

Hendricks, 36, managed to extinguish the fire -- but it burned a huge hole in the coat, which she ended up throwing away.

The redhead has had a run of bad luck. At this year's Golden Globes, she lost an $850,000 diamond bracelet on the red carpet.

Other celebrities at the party included Bono, Lily Rabe, Matthew Broderick, Helen Reddy, Tovah Feldshuh and Jackie Hoffman.

Mila Kunis & Justin Timberlake: The most inappropriate Award-Show key - MTV.com (blog)

MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night, Justin Timberlake proved just how "totally Platonic" his relationship with Mila Kunis is when he took him as a crowdsurfer at Ozzfest.

Of course, Kunis was all too happy to return the favor, low and striking JT junk while both - which, it should be noted, star of the upcoming comedy "Friends with benefits" (and which the report was the subject of speculation go well in the past) - announced the nominees for "Best male Performance."

Unsurprisingly, in the hours following the price, Kunis and Timberlake rather, uh, unique embrace became the thing searched for the most part on the Internet, and since the zeitgeist clearly likes some good old fashioned genital-trial and error, we would be remiss if we point out that, over the years, MTV awards shows were essentially set the standard for touch inappropriate... we are sort of pioneer in this regard.

With Mila and of Justin sensing still fresh in the minds of everyone, here's a look back on some of the key more inappropriate in the history of MTV award show.

Howard Stern: "Fartman" at the Video Music Awards of 1992
Chaps ass-less of Stern were certainly inappropriate, the reason why we have included this bit here is when Luke Perry (in first mode "90210") welcomes and place both hands on the Pasty cheeks of the Fartman. To add emphasis - and enable the ILO to stretch about three agonizing minutes - Stern then invited a woman from the audience to also seize a handful. Gross groundbreakingly.

Milton Berle and RuPaul at the Video Music Awards of 1993
One of the most difficult moments in the history of the VMA arrived in 1993, when presented with RuPaul and unexpected comedy legend grabbed the breast of the drag icon. RU responded by spitting "therefore you used to wear of gowns, but now that you wear layered" (in reference to the comedy bits old travesty of Berle,) which Uncle Miltie shot back "Oh, we'll ad lib?" I'll check my brain and we'll start even. "Inappropriate and uncomfortable in every sense.

Lil Kim and Diana Ross at the Video Music Awards of 1999
We weren't the only ones amazed by Kim ' 99 VMA get - up, a sparkling number which left, one of her breasts covered by just a part. Icon of Motown Diana Ross could not also take his eyes to the coast of the outfit... or his hand off the coast of the chest of Kim, indeed. His brief grope met with thunderous applause from the crowd and remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of the VMA.

Brüno falls on Eminem at MTV Movie Awards 2009
In theory, Sacha Baron Cohen - in full glory Brüno - attended the ' 09 Movie Awards for his next film of humbug and the award for the best male Performance. But tilted its descent to the stage and later, it was left with his tail firmly on the face of Eminem. All of this may have been planned, but the reaction of the Em - and the subsequent fight ensuing - certainly seemed real at the time.

Tell us what you think in the comments section and on Twitter!

"The wives and mothers - they all," said Carrie DePalma.

DePalma has inspired many children in his 20 years of advocacy devoted to youth hockey.

One was James van Riemsdyk, who played for teams of DePalma of syringes of submarines, was drafted second by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2007.

But DePalma knows that these success stories are rare. It focuses on simple objectives for the children of averages.

"In 20 years, I have never had a player quit on me, said DePalma." "" Carrie who tested. I thought he said. They need to have fun. Kids especially are smoking because of the pressure put on by the coaches. That she remembered that means a lot to me. »

Even more costs and their parents.

"satisfaction," said DePalma, "comes from when you are coaching kids returning in four years and say,"thanks to you, coach, I am not delay work."" Coaching is about education - teaching kids about things that they can carry with them for life.

"When it comes to special needs program that we began a year ago, the satisfaction is whenever you just ice - no expectations of hockey for children." Parents say "Thank you." Thank you for what to do? "Thank you for only there." Every day are a reward. This [price] is something extra - something special. »

What a James Beard Award-winning chef cook when it comes to home to St. Louis for the remembrance day?

His choice of condiments provides the first clue: "Hey, you got any Maull?".

Yes, the grill is covered-what else? -pork steaks. Sausage and chicken legs will soon take their place. It is quite a head of plates foie gras changing start Patrick Connolly made at RADIUS restaurant four stars in Boston and crispy duck thigh is currently in the restaurant, Bobo in Manhattan West Village.

But it is a standard menu for a barbecue in Garden of St. Louis, even if the three brothers Connolly, are not exactly a family of St. Louis standard.

Host this afternoon, Dan, 28, is an offensive lineman for the Patriots from New England who last year set an NFL record unusual: kickoff more long return by an offensive player (71 yards against Green Bay). In the shoulder, he lives with his wife and daughter in a modest house in two floors in Glendale. "I bought a copy of"The French Laundry Cookbook"of books in the left bank (all about Dressel) and instantly I knew that I wanted to pursue a career." Then, Tony Bourdain made a book signing for "Tower of Cook A" VIP Duff by the left bank and a friend I dragged inside.

"I was already on the culinary school, and when I asked him for advice on what to do after school, he said: ' do not money or title.". Take still work (more excremental) at the restaurant and learn as much as you can. »

"If I went on my way to work non-stop for little money and with little social life." I ran into him at LaGuardia Airport last year and thanked for advice, he gave me once.

In 2002, Patrick enrolled at the University of Johnson & the country of Wales in Providence, R.I., who is renowned for the culinary combination and liberal arts programs. Yet again, however, learning in the classroom is not appeal to him, although he managed to pack in enough kitchen training to land a job in a restaurant in Providence.

"I was a little worried when my paychecks started bouncing", he said. Therefore, following the advice of the Bourdain, he conducted research on the 10 best restaurants in Boston and lined with CV, a line cook at RADIUS position. In four years, he worked in the Chief Executive, and in 2007, he was named for James Beard Rising Star Award leaders less than 30 years. The following year, he won the James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Northeast.

"I knew that I leave the radius of approximately six months before", says Patrick. "He gave me a good opportunity to find a new place."

Bobo opened for about nine months, but has been bad for an identity, having already crossed two counts.

"I was doing the thing four stars, ticket for a long time and wanted to do something new, said Patrick." The Bobo menu concept was based on food served at a dinner, giving him a wide range.

His food was a success, and Patrick will work with the owners of Bobo to open another restaurant in a few months. The concept of this restaurant has not crystallized, but it is expected that the space - a store old paper to West 10th Street and Greenwich Street, a few blocks from Bobo - will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and have an any element of retail sale. It also provides for working with Brooklyn Grange, a programme that farms (or at least large garden) on the roofs of the city of New York, both to produce restaurant and as an education for local schools.

It is getting pretty crowded now family day, perhaps because the mother of boys Connolly is one of 12 children and mother-in-law of Dan was one of the 15.

Patrick stands in the Dan kitchen counter, quickly and methodically juice limes for a pitcher of margaritas. "We should steep a couple of these chiles in tequila making beverages", he said.

It is soon to return to the grill, but this time it is roasting green onions, peppers of different colours and asparagus.

Increased beverages and grilled vegetables cannot be part of the standard menu for a garden barbecue, but there is no standard backyard barbecue chef.
