HAMLIN - All nine of Lincoln County?s schools recently received Gold Awards of Distinction in the USDA?s Food and Nutrition Service?s HealthierUS School Challenge program. An awards ceremony was held at Lincoln County Board of Education headquarters in Hamlin, Monday, June 6, 2011.
The nine county schools, Midway Elementary, Ranger Elementary, West Hamlin Elementary, Duval PK-8, Hamlin PK-8, Guyan Valley Middle School, Harts Intermediate, Harts Primary and Lincoln County High School, were the only award winners in West Virginia. Only 127 schools in the nation received gold awards, of which nine were the Lincoln County facilities.
The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. In February, 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced Let?s Move, incorporating the HealthierUS School Challenge into her campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids. At that time, monetary incentive awards became available for each HUSSC award level: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Award of Distinction. The nine schools in Lincoln County received the Gold Award of Distinction.
Lincoln County Board of Education member Steve Priestley paid tribute to the county?s schools and nutrition personnel. During comments at the June 7, 2011 regular session of the board in Hamlin, Priestley described the awards as a ?tremendous achievement.? He also told his board colleagues that Lincoln was the first county in the state to receive the gold award, and the first in the mid-Atlantic region to do so. Priestley also praised the work of the county administration and Food Service Director Diane Miller.
