Five local Girl Scout troops and their members were honored for their hard work and dedication to their community by receiving some of scouting's highest honors at a ceremony last week.
The evening began with a flag ceremony, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise. An introduction was given by both AnnMarie Rogers and Donna Colucci, the Service Unit Managers for New Milford.
The mistress of ceremonies for the evening was Angela Perrone, the former New Milford Girl Scouts Service Unit Manager.
The first awards of the night were the Bronze Awards, given to Junior Girl Scout troops who successfully completed a major year-long project of service to their community.
Troop 78: Joanne Prisendorf and Rebecca Bolivar, leaders
This troop made “Affirmation Jars” which were distributed to cancer patients at Hackensack University Medical Center. The girls came up with the slogan, “One Jar, One Smile." The troop designed a flyer which was distributed and posted around town in the hopes of collecting many jars. After jars were collected, the girls researched positive slogans and words to be placed into the jars which were then decorated and distributed.
Troop 1506: Debra Bossone and Tina Youngs, leaders
This troop decided to help the New Milford Food Pantry at Ascension Parish. Volunteers explained the most needed items in the pantry are paper towels and toilet paper. The girls came up with a target number of 101 paper products that they wanted to collect over a seven month period. They set a date for the first collection and to their surprise they almost hit their target just with the first collection alone. The target was then raised by 100 and again up to 340. Every time there was a collection, two girls from the troop went to the pantry with the donations and helped stock the shelves. This process went on until every girl in the troop got a chance to deliver to the pantry. The final count on March 30, the last day of collections, was 353 rolls of toilet paper and paper towels.
Troop 1507: Wendy Mackey and Marsel Altinbas, leaders
These scouts were moved to hear about the growing number of hungry children in Bergen County, after a visit to the food pantry at the Center for Food Action in Englewood. They realized that children were going hungry not only during weekdays, but on weekends as well. Troop 1507 volunteered with the “Weekend Snack Pack Program.” The program collects nutritious snacks, packs them into a bag and discreetly delivers them to children in need on Friday afternoon. Many solicitation letters were written to national companies for donations, various websites were visited, faxes were sent, calls were made and local vendors in New Milford were also asked to participate. Flyers, posters and drop boxes were also created and placed to advertise the program. When the final count of over 120 bags were assembled containing 6 items each along with an additional $150 of other food donations, they knew their hard work paid off.
The Silver Award is given to a Cadette troop after completion of a multi-year project and many individual hours of community service.
Troop 68: Kathy Bevacqua, leader
These scouts worked on beautifying the New Milford Recreation Building. This building is used by the community for meetings, sports registration and sports team pictures. The troop painted the interior hallway to help brighten the entryway, as well as worked around the exterior of the building. A wooden sign was built to be hung on the outside of the building.
The highest honor is Girl Scouts is the Gold Award, which is given to individual scouts after they complete a monumental project of service to their communities.
Troop 1148: Jean Munier and Lynn Torpie, leaders; Elise Munier, Gold Award Recipient
Munier’s gold award entitled “Through the Eyes of a Veteran”, revolved around The Veterans History Project. She contacted Andrew Whitehouse from Congressman Scott Garrett’s office to obtain The Veterans History Project field kit information packet. She then contacted Rich Schimel, Vietnam War Veteran and commander of the Bergenfield VFW post 6467 and Robert Chester, Korean War Veteran and Commander of New Milford VFW post 4290, to present the idea of a veteran telling their story for historical documentation. Elise met with each post during their monthly business meeting to explain her objective of conducting and preserving interviews. She interviewed, digitally recorded and photographed each veteran. She then transcribed the recordings of 20 veterans from all branches of service, and made a CD audio disc for the Library of Congress and each veteran. During the 75 hours needed to complete the project, Elise learned much about wartime experiences and gained life skills that will serve her will in the Presidential Leadership Program that she was accepted into at Montclair State University for next fall. She was very excited to personally meet with Congressman Scott Garrett to present her completed project as the final step on March 25, 2011.
The event's special guest speaker was Kathy Carter, a sophomore at Ramapo College, who is currently the only New Milford Girl Scout to have earned the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
In addition to Carter, several area dignitaries including school administrators, elected officials and more came out to honor the scouts for their work.
