While family and friends looked on, members of Lawrence High School’s Class of 2011 accepted 103 different awards during the school’s Senior Awards Ceremony held last Thursday night (June 9).
Among the awards presented were the Einstein Physics Award, National Merit Scholarship Letters of Commendation and numerous memorial scholarships.
Many students walked away with multiple accolades. Tina Moon left with an armload of honors, among them a Mercer County Professional Counselors Association’s “Caring for Humanity” Award, the Lawrence High School Principal Award and the Sunshine Club Award.
“To be honest, I came to say the pledge,” said Moon, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.
The senior class president, who participates in several school activities, said she was shocked to receive so many awards.
But Linda Ryan, who presented the Sunshine Club Award to Moon, wasn’t. “When does she find time to sleep?” Ryan said after reading off a list of Moon’s activities.
“I didn’t know this is what happened,” Moon said. “You never know what you’re going to get from joining a club or two.”
Moon wasn’t the only surprised student. Desire Alvarez immediately shook her head and said “no” when asked if she’d expected any of her awards, which included a MCPCA “Caring for Humanity” Award and the Lawrence High School Student Council Scholarship.
The cheerleader said she spent many late nights at the school, sometimes not leaving until 6:30 p.m. She was also the Student Council president.
“I’m going to miss this school,” she said, looking around the cafeteria where the awards ceremony was held.
The school will miss her as well. Doreen Welsh, who presented the Lawrence High School Student Council Scholarship, called Alvarez her “right-hand woman.”
“I don’t know what I could have done without her,” Welsh said. “I will miss her greatly.”
Besides awards given by different departments in the school, there were also many memorial scholarships doled out. This included one that celebrated the life of Ralph Dobrich. He died of cancer in 2007 but not before inspiring his friends to create a scholarship in his honor.
“Have faith in your abilities,” Richard DeFalco, who presented the award, told recipients. “Inspire those around you and continue to make us proud.”
The parents of Thomas J. Carnevali Jr. – an artist who was killed in a car accident in 2008 – shared their son’s story along with an award in his honor.
The award provided $1,500 to the high school’s art program to help buy supplies. “There are students who cannot always afford the tools they need,” Thomas Carnevali Sr. said. He said that teachers often dip into their own funds to provide those supplies.
“Thank you for mentoring and assisting students who will change the world in their own way through art,” Carnevali said.
The Carnevalis also presented one of their late son’s pastels to student Julia Dubin, asking that as a caveat of receiving the award she return the favor by sending the foundation one of her own original artworks.
Despite the awards and accolades, the work has only just begun for these students. Moon and Alvarez both said they intend to enroll in Rutgers University next year and start their college studies.
And even disregarding college, Principal David A. Roman reminded students that their time at Lawrence High School is not yet over. “I cannot believe that tomorrow you have…what?” he asked. Students were happy to shout out the dwindling number of days they had left until their graduation on June 17.
“Get here bright and early,” Roman said.
