The Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive back, joined Monday the ever-growing list of awards that have released their preseason watch lists for 2011.
This year’s group for the Thorpe consists of 37 players, including a conference-leading 10 players from the SEC. The ACC is next with seven, followed by the Big 12's six and four apiece for the Big Ten and Pac-12.
Alabama led all individual schools with three players on the list — strong safety Mark Barron, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and free safety Robert Lester. Oklahoma and Florida State with two apiece were the only other schools with more than one player to make the list.
Position-wise, there were 18 cornerbacks, 12 free safeties and seven strong safeties.
Last year’s winner was LSU’s Patrick Peterson, who left school a year early for the NFL draft.
For those curious as to the history of the Thorpe Award and the man with his name on it, here’s a portion of the release, followed by the complete 2011 preseason watch list:
The Thorpe Award, one of the most coveted awards in college football, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2011. The Award, established in 1986, is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.
